If you already hold an active GSTIN, you can apply for another one under the same PAN and let the portal copy your existing details into the new application. Since 1 September 2026, Part B of FORM GST REG-01 offers a "Yes, Auto-Populate Details" option, which fills eligible details from your existing registration after the primary authorised signatory of that GSTIN approves by OTP, according to GSTN's announcement of 10 September 2026.
The new premises are not something the portal can copy. Every registration needs its own principal place of business (PPOB) with its own proof.
Before using the option, settle whether you need a second registration at all. In the same state, the answer is usually no.
Key facts at a glance
Question | Position as on 9 October 2026 |
|---|---|
Can one PAN hold several GSTINs? | Yes: one per state where registration is needed, and separate registrations within a state under Section 25(2) and Rule 11 |
New feature | Auto-populate option in Part B of FORM GST REG-01, live since 1 September 2026 |
Who can use it? | Applicants with an active GSTIN under the same PAN, in the same or another state |
Consent | OTP from the primary authorised signatory of the existing GSTIN |
Editable? | Yes; auto-filled details can be reviewed and edited before saving |
Several states at once? | Use the Multistate Registration tab under GSTN Advisory No. 674 dated 1 October 2026 |
Do you need a second registration at all?
Start here, because the wrong choice is hard to reverse. The test is the state.
Your situation | What you need |
|---|---|
New office, shop or godown in the same state | An additional place of business on your existing GSTIN, through a core field amendment |
Stock or operations in another state | A separate registration in that state; Section 25(1) of the CGST Act makes registration state-wise |
A second location in the same state that you want accounted separately | A separate registration under Section 25(2) and Rule 11, if you accept the conditions |
A different business owned by a different person | Its own registration on its own PAN; auto-populate does not apply |
For the same state, our position is to use an additional place of business unless you have a clear reason to separate. Rule 11 attaches costs to a separate registration. Supplies between your two registered places become taxable and need tax invoices, and you cannot pay tax under composition at one place while paying normally at another.
How the auto-populate option works
These steps follow GSTN's announcement of 10 September 2026. Screen labels may differ slightly on the live portal.
Start a new registration on the GST portal and complete Part A with the same PAN, choosing the state you need.
In Part B of FORM GST REG-01, select "Yes, Auto-Populate Details".
The primary authorised signatory of your existing GSTIN receives an OTP. Enter it to give consent.
Eligible details from the existing registration are filled into the new application.
Review every auto-filled field, edit anything that differs for the new registration, then save and continue.
Promoters and partners receive SMS and email alerts after the OTP verification succeeds.
The announcement does not list which fields carry over. Expect constitution, promoter and signatory details to be copied, and expect to enter the new state's premises yourself, because a PPOB belongs to a single registration.
What you must prepare fresh for the new registration
Premises. Para 6A of CBIC Instruction No. 03/2025-GST dated 17 April 2025 sets the documents for each nature of possession. In another state with no office of your own, the usual route is a documented virtual place of business as the PPOB, with any fulfilment centre added as an additional place.
Aadhaar authentication. It is done for each application. Under para 8(iii) of the same instruction, skipping or failing it sends the application to physical verification, with a 30-day timeline.
Authorised signatory. If a different person will run the new state's compliance, edit the signatory in the auto-filled data and attach that person's letter of authorisation. Our letter of authorisation specimen shows the fields.
Auto-populate or Multistate Registration
Need | Better route |
|---|---|
One more state, existing GSTIN | REG-01 with the auto-populate option |
Three or more new states at once | Multistate Registration with a Master TRN (GSTN Advisory No. 674) |
New business, no GSTIN yet, several states | Multistate Registration |
The Multistate Registration facility is currently open only to Normal Taxpayers, and its Master TRN must be submitted within 15 days.
What changes after a second GSTIN is granted
Each registration is a distinct person under Section 25(4) of the CGST Act. Stock sent from one of your GSTINs to another is a supply under Schedule I, para 2, even without consideration, and needs a tax invoice.
Each GSTIN also files its own returns. A second registration roughly doubles the monthly filing load, which is the practical reason not to take one you do not need.
Each registration also needs its own books at its own principal place of business under Section 35(1) of the CGST Act, its own certificate displayed under Rule 18, and its own reconciliation of marketplace TCS against sales. Budget for that work before applying, not after the first notice.
Small marketplace sellers expanding into another state should also watch Rule 14B. The 57th GST Council recommended it on 8 October 2026 to let them declare a marketplace warehouse as the PPOB in that state, with automatic grant. It is not yet notified.

Your next step: confirm whether the new location is in a new state, then arrange its premises documents before starting the REG-01 with auto-populate.
