What is a Digital Signature Certificate?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure cryptographic key issued by a Certifying Authority licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, used to digitally sign electronic documents and authenticate the signer's identity on government and corporate portals.

DSCs are issued under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and are legally equivalent to handwritten signatures for electronic documents where digital signing is accepted. Class 2 DSC was discontinued from January 1, 2021, so only Class 3 DSCs are issued for new applications today.

A DSC is stored in a FIPS-certified USB token such as HYP2003 or ProxKey and used to sign electronic forms on government portals. The certificate carries identity details verified through Aadhaar eKYC, PAN eKYC where applicable, and mandatory video verification.
