GST geocoding of principal place of business on map

Geocoding on the GST portal attaches a system-verified map location to the address of your principal place of business (PPOB). You open it under Services, then Registration, accept or correct the geocoded address the portal suggests, and submit. According to the GSTN advisory dated 24 February 2023, it is a one-time activity: once submitted, the geocoded address cannot be revised.

That one-time rule is the reason to slow down. A wrong locality or PIN accepted in a hurry stays on your record.

Geocoding does not change the address on your registration certificate. That address changes only through a core field amendment.

What geocoding does

Geocoding stores a structured, map-matched version of your PPOB address alongside the address you typed at registration. The advisory describes it as saved separately: it does not replace your existing address.

After submission, you can see it under My Profile, in the Place of Business tab, under the heading Principal Geocoded. The profile also has a Geocoded Places of Business tab, according to the GST portal user manual for viewing a taxpayer profile.

How to complete geocoding on the GST portal

These steps follow the GSTN advisory dated 24 February 2023. Screen labels may have changed slightly since.

  1. Log in to the GST portal.

  2. Go to Services, then Registration, and open the geocoding option.

  3. The portal shows a geocoded version of your PPOB address. Compare it line by line with your possession document.

  4. If the suggestion is correct, accept it. If any part is wrong, update it in the fields provided.

  5. If the portal shows no suggestion, the fields appear blank. Enter the address carefully yourself.

  6. Submit. The geocoding link then disappears for your GSTIN.

The checks to make before you submit

Because the advisory allows no revision, treat the screen at step 3 as final. Check these five points against the document you uploaded as proof of your PPOB.

  • Building and unit. The house, plot or shop number and floor match exactly.

  • Locality. The suggested locality is where the premises actually are, not a neighbouring sector with a similar name.

  • District and PIN. The PIN matches your possession document, and the district is the one your jurisdiction falls in.

  • City or village name. Suggested spellings sometimes differ from municipal records. Keep the name that matches your property tax receipt or electricity bill.

  • Landmark. Leave out a landmark that is not in your documents.

If the PPOB on your certificate is itself wrong, fix that first through a principal place of business change. Geocoding a wrong address only fixes the error in one more place.

Geocoding and your additional places of business

The 2023 advisory deals with the principal place of business. Additional places of business, such as a godown or a fulfilment centre, are added and changed through core field amendments, and each one should be typed exactly as its possession document prints it.

When you add a new additional place, use the same discipline you used for the PPOB geocode: building, locality, district and PIN copied from the document, not from memory. Our guide to adding an additional place of business lists the fields in order.

Why the location on your record matters

The location data on your registration is what anyone reading it relies on. Under para 8 of CBIC Instruction No. 03/2025-GST dated 17 April 2025, an officer who physically verifies premises uploads a report in FORM GST REG-30 with a GPS-enabled photograph and gives a specific finding on whether the declared premises exist.

Keep every location on your record pointing to the same building: the certificate address, the geocoded address and the premises an officer would actually reach. A geocoded pin in the next sector does not cancel a registration, but it is one more inconsistency you would have to explain.

Geocoding for a virtual office PPOB

If your PPOB is a virtual office or coworking address, geocode the provider's building exactly as it appears in your agreement and the provider's ownership document. Do not substitute your home or head office address because it feels more permanent.

Ask the provider for the exact address format other clients have used, including floor and unit. If the portal suggests a nearby building with a similar name, correct it before submitting, because a virtual office is the address type most likely to be visited for verification. Our guide to documents for GST registration with a virtual office covers the agreement and ownership papers that the address must match.

If you have already submitted a wrong geocoded address

The advisory provides no edit option, and the link disappears after submission. Two steps are still worth taking.

Check whether the error is only in the geocoded version or also in the certificate address. If the certificate address is wrong, file a core field amendment in FORM GST REG-14 within 15 days under Rule 19 of the CGST Rules.

If only the geocoded version is wrong, raise a grievance on the GST portal describing the error and keep the acknowledgement. Keep your possession documents ready to show the correct premises if an officer asks.

Your next step: log in, open My Profile and look for a Principal Geocoded entry. If it is missing, complete geocoding with your possession document open beside you.
