What Is GST Registration?
GST registration is the process of enrolling your business under the Goods and Services Tax. Once registered, your business receives a GSTIN, a unique 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number. This number is your business identity under GST. You need it to collect tax from customers, claim input tax credit on purchases and file GST returns.
The first two digits of a GSTIN show the state of registration. Maharashtra's code is 27, so every GSTIN issued in Mumbai begins with 27, followed by the PAN of the business.
Running above the threshold without registration is costly. The penalty is 10% of the tax due, with a minimum of ₹10,000. It rises to 100% where tax is deliberately evaded.
Who Needs GST Registration in Mumbai?

GST Registration Guide for Mumbai Businesses
Trade is Mumbai's first GST pattern. Importers pay IGST at customs on every consignment, and without a GSTIN that money is simply lost, because only a registered business can claim it back as input tax credit. Exporters run the other direction. Diamonds from the Bharat Diamond Bourse, jewellery from Zaveri Bazar and SEEPZ, and garments from across the city ship abroad, and pairing the registration with a LUT filing lets them export without paying IGST. We set up both sides cleanly.
The second pattern saves Mumbai businesses money and paperwork. GST registration is state-wise, and Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and even Pune are all Maharashtra. One GSTIN covers them, with each location added as an additional place of business. You only need a new registration when you cross the state line, for example a warehouse in Gujarat, and our virtual place of business (VPOB) service handles those states while Mumbai stays the anchor.
The third pattern is the address. High rents push startups into co-working floors in Lower Parel, BKC and Andheri, and freelancers and creators often register from homes in housing societies. Both work, but the agreement, NOC and utility bill must carry matching names, and the application must select the correct Maharashtra jurisdiction. We verify the chain before uploading anything.
