Overview

What Is GST Registration?

GST registration is the process of enrolling your business under the Goods and Services Tax. Once registered, your business receives a GSTIN, a unique 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number. This number is your business identity under GST. You need it to collect tax from customers, claim input tax credit on purchases and file GST returns.

The first two digits of a GSTIN show the state of registration. Karnataka's code is 29, so every GSTIN issued in the state, from Bidar to Mangaluru, begins with 29, followed by the PAN of the business.

Running above the threshold without registration is costly. The penalty is 10% of the tax due, with a minimum of ₹10,000. It rises to 100% where tax is deliberately evaded.

Karnataka guide

GST Registration Guide Across Karnataka

Karnataka's GST work follows its map. In Bengaluru, the state's tech capital, registrations run from co-working floors and startup offices, and we cover that city in depth on our dedicated GST registration in Bangalore page. Beyond it, the patterns change. Hubballi-Dharwad and Davanagere trade goods across state lines into Maharashtra, where one invoice makes registration compulsory. Belagavi's foundries and Mysuru's units supply industrial buyers who purchase only on GST invoices. Mangaluru works its port, where exporters of cashew, coffee and seafood pair the GSTIN with a LUT filing to ship abroad without paying IGST. The coffee planters of Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu meet GST the moment their beans sell to roasters outside the state.

The one-state rule simplifies growth inside Karnataka. A business with a Bengaluru office, a Mysuru unit and a Hubballi godown holds one GSTIN, with each location added as an additional place of business, and we file those amendments too. Crossing the state line is different. A warehouse in Tamil Nadu or Maharashtra needs that state's registration, which our virtual place of business (VPOB) service provides while Karnataka stays the anchor.

Every application, from any district, asks for the correct state jurisdiction, the DGSTO division and LGSTO office mapped to your address. A wrong pick is the most common reason Karnataka files sit in clarification, so we map it before filing, along with the rent agreement, NOC and electricity bill chain that must carry matching names.
